Edward James Duckett
Birth: Aug. 10, 1881
Lancashire, England
Death: Dec. 26, 1963
Utah County
Utah, USA

Edward James Duckett was born 10th of August 1881 in Bootle, Liverpool, England, the eldest of 10 children born to James and Mary Ellen Robinson Duckett. He and his brothers followed the trade of their father and their grandfather as hair dressers, as they are called in England, barbers in America. After his schooling he worked in barber shops with his father and brothers and later had his own shop. Then they all went to sea as ship barbers and traveled in different directions to all parts of the world.

He loved the sea but missed us terribly for his trips extended into nine weeks, with ten days at home before setting sail again. He enjoyed showing his many pictures and re-living all the experiences of those years at sea. He treasured the mementos that he brought with him to this country.

Dad was a barber on West Center St. in Provo from 1912 until his retirement in 1945. For a few years he was joined in the business by his two sons, Arthur L. and John Souter Duckett, who had graduated from barber colleges. After his retirement, he became associated with his son in the A.L. Duckett Sales and Service company until 1957. He was a lover of good music and was a patron of the concert and Lyceum services participating actively in these functions for more than forty years.

He could not console himself to mother's passing and his health and eyesight failed rapidly before his death on the morning after Christmas Dec 26th, 1963. He stayed for a year or so at the homes of his children. It wasn't easy for him to leave his own home for he was independent and had hoped always to be able to take care of himself. His greatest desire was that when he was gone we would all think of him as always being kind and that we do most assuredly.
