Director of the National Security Agency. He was a lieutenant commander and fighter pilot in the US Navy during World War II. Qualified as an ace after shooting down five Japanese planes during the war, Gayler was the first pilot to be awarded three Navy Crosses. He served as director of the National Security Agency for two years under President Richard Nixon, and in 1972 was named head of the US Pacific Command. During his four years at that post he oversaw the American bombing campaign against North Vietnam.
