In 1849, James traveled west in hopes of finding gold in the California Gold Rush. However, while there James received word that Flavilla had died on March 10, 1850. As soon as he heard about her death he returned home to Iowa. With several children under the age of 10, James married his second wife Agnes Speers on 1 January 1851.
He died on the family farm south of Maple Hill, Kansas. It is assumed that he is buried there as well.
