Judith "Judy" S. McKay, 65, 336 Duggar Road, died at 2:15 p.m. Friday, June 21, 2013, at her home following a long illness. She was born Oct. 26, 1947 in Royal Oak, Mo., the daughter of Franklin W. and Hazel Lee Bales. She married Charles Eugene McKay, June 11, 1966, in Alton, Mo. She was employed as an English Professor at Arkansas State University, retiring in 2010 after 26 years of service.
Survivors include her husband, Charles; three sons, Shaun (Stephanie) McKay, Ruston, La., Kevin (Caitlin) McKay, Jacksonville, Ark., and Robert (Tanya) McKay, Shreveport, La.; her father, Franklin W. Bales of Poplar Bluff, Mo.; one brother, Ron (Paula) Bales, Dyersburg, Tenn., and eight grandchildren, Jayce, Emma, Haley, Charles, Konor, Karlee, Gracyn, and Harlee; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Hazel Lee Bales, in 1969.
Per Judy's request, there will be no funeral service. Burial will be in Smith Cemetery, Alton, Mo.
Judith Sue Bales McKay, Ph.D., retired Associate Professor of English at Arkansas State University-Beebe, died June 21, 2013, after a two-year battle with breast cancer.
Judy was the daughter of Franklin Willard Bales and the late Hazel Mary Lee Bales of Alton, Missouri. For 47 years, she was the wife of Eugene McKay, current Chancellor of ASU-Beebe, the mother of three sons: Shaun (Ruston, LA), Kevin (Jacksonville, AR), and Robert (Shreveport, LA); and the grandmother of 8 children.
Judy loved to read and said she had read every book in the Alton, Missouri Public Library, before graduating as valedictorian of the class of 1965. She later received a baccalaureate in English from the University of Central Arkansas and a Master of Arts and Ph.D. in English from Ole Miss. She taught two years at Cabot High School and 26 at ASU-Beebe before retiring in 2010.
She died on June 21, 2013. At her request, she was cremated and buried in a grave next to her mother in Alton, Missouri with a private family funeral.
