Dr. Lena A. Benjamin, medical missionary to India for nearly four decades during which time she was in charge of a hospital in Southern India, died Saturday, March 22, 1958, at Cuba Memorial Hospital, at the age of 82.
Dr. Benjamin, who spent 39 years a physician in charge of the American Baptist Mission Hospital at Nellore, South India, was a native of Friendship. Her parents, Marion J. and Louise Petty Benjamin, moved their family from Friendship to the West not long after Dr. Benjamin was born, on October 17, 1875. They returned to this area to live at Bradford, Pa., which was Dr. Benjamin's home during her youth. She was graduated in 1899 from the School of Medicine of the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor and afterwards entered the mission field. After her retirement she lived at Friendship with her sister, Mrs. Dana Kuhn, until the latter's death in 1952. Dr. Benjamin had been a patient at Cuba Memorial Hospital for nearly six years prior to her death.
Dr. Benjamin is survived by six nephews and nieces, Mrs. Louis Colley, Bolivar; Mrs. Clair Willison, Bradford, Pa.; Mrs. Ira MacKenzie, Brockton; Walter Kuhn and Dana Kuhn of California; Marion Benjamin, Limestone; and several cousins. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Friendship.
Funeral services were held at the Davis Funeral Home, Friendship, on Tuesday, March 25, the Rev. Martz Snyder officiating. Burial was at Mt. Hope cemetery, Friendship.
