Note from Elizabeth Wagner: He died due to an accident according to a newspaper article found, published Thursday, Nov. 8, 1883, Austin Weekly Statesman, Austin, TX. . . .

"Horrible Affair, Contractor Fred Braun Slips And Breaks His Neck" . . . "Last night about dark the city was thrown into a state of excitement over one of the most singular and at the same time one of the most painful accidents that has ever occurred in Austin. Mr. Fred Braun, the well-known contractor, and who at the time of his death had the contract for the work at the asylum, went with his teams to the International depot to receive a consignment of paints and oils, to be used in his contract at the asylum. He had loaded most of his goods and was putting others in his wagons from the high platform of the depot when his foot slipped and he was thrown to the ground in such a way that he struck on his head, breaking his neck and killing him instantly. Justice Tegener was notified and he summoned a jury of inquest, who however, have not returned a verdict, the inquest being continued until nine o'clock this morning. . . . Mr. Braun was well known in the city as a man whom everybody likes and his sad fate was the principal topic of conversation last night. He is a single man, having only a sister* in his family left to mourn his loss. The funeral will probably take place this afternoon and will be duly announced by the customary circulars."

(*actually 2 sisters, Emilie Braun Mueller of San Antonio, TX, Henriette Braun and his mother Elisa Elmendorf Braun who were living with him in Austin)
