William Francis Marion Nobles was was born in Blount Co AL not long after his parents located there from Laurens Co SC. His parents were Russell & Elizabeth (Lowe) Nobles. Paternal grandparents were Thomas & Sarah Nobles and maternal grandparents were William & Elizabeth Lowe. His siblings were Mark, Mary, Rebecca, James, Samuel, Elizabeth, John and Sarah. The names of 3 are unknown.
On 14 Jul 1856, he married 18 year old Martha McGlathery, daughter of Darling H & Matilda (Nelson) McGlathery. She died in June of the following year after giving birth to their daughter, Mary Susan.
On 24 Apr 1858, he married Tarilla Smith with whom he had daughters, Elizabeth Vilanda and Martha Arminda.
He enlisted with the 2nd Kentucky Calvary, Co G, in Blountsville AL on 14 May 1862. His company was engaged at the battle of Buffington Island, Ohio, where he was captured on 19 Jul 1863. Records show he was received on 23 July 1863 at Camp Morton, Indiana, then transferred to Camp Douglas, IL where he was received on 18 Aug 1863. Documents from Camp Douglas show the names of 42 other soldiers from his company. After having been a prisoner of war for 18 months, he died on 11 Jan 1865. Prison records simply state "Debility" after his death date. His widow filed for a pension listing his cause of death as small pox. She was likely given this information from others of his company who survived their time at Camp Douglas and returned home after the war.
