Leroy was married twice. His first wife was Sarah Frances Milam who was born about 1848. She was the mother of Riley J, Mary E, Ida O, Sim L, W C, Jim H, William Arthur, and Melvin S Stephens.

His second wife was Lizzie who was born in June 1874. She was the mother of June Bell, Volleit, Emmet, Albert Roy, Hattie M, and Jessie L Stephens.


Military: Co I, 30th Regiment (after reorganization in 1862, became Co E), Georgia Volunteer Infantry, Army of Tennessee, CSA, "Clayton Invincibles", Clayton Co GA. Private.

This company was ordered to the relief of Gen Finegan at east Florida 4 Oct 1862 by order of Gen Mercer. Arrived at Jacksonville FL 6 Oct 1862 and remained to 11th Oct when they returned to Camp Hardee arriving 15 Oct 1862. Ordered by Gen Mercer to Coosawatchie SC where they remained one day and returned to Camp Hardee Oct 1862. Left Savannah GA on 14 Dec 1862 (by train) and arrived at Wilmington NC 19 Dec 1862.

Pension Applications: Leroy E Stephens, private, Co E, 30th Reg, been in state since 25 Apr 1845. Joined service at age 16. In May 1864 overcome by heat and exhaustion, causing enlargement of vein and contracting of muscle on right side and leg followed by rheumatism. Now suffers from liver and spleen complaints, hepatitis and bronchitis. First application dated 1891. [Pension records show he was disabled by disease contracted in service at New Hope Church GA, 25 May 1864. The battle has been called New Hope Church, but the soldiers knew it by "Hell's Hole."]

Death Certificate #5338, GA State Board Of Health, Bureau of Vital Statistics. Does not show father or mother. Appears to have been signed by N E McAllister, "Supt" of the Confederate Soldiers Home. States that the causse of death was cancer of lower lip with melasitases, duration of 10 years, no autopsy, diagnosis by clinical evidence, /s/ K L Corley MD, 302 Atlanta Nat Bank Bldg. States that he was 84 yrs, 9 mo, 14 days, widowed. Attended by the above physician from Aug 1928 to 7 Feb 1929. Physician last saw him alive on 7 Feb 1929. Death occurred at 4:20 AM on 8 Feb 1929.
