Sophia Ott was born on Christmas day, December 25, 1818 in Mecklenburg. This area is currently Nordwestmecklenburg, a district in the north-western part of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany that borders Schleswig-Holstein on the west.
Her parents were Johann Joachim Ott and Maria Dorotea (Sommer) Ott. She married Joachim Stender and had four sons:
1. Charles H. - 1850-1918;
2. Ludwig Frits Christian (Louie) - 1848-1926;
3. Johannes Andreas (John) - 1853-1936; and
4. Vilhelm Frederick August (William) - 1854-1875.
Joachim Stender died in Europe and Sophia later married Soren Anderson and had two sons and one daughter:
1. Peter Anderson - 1857-1938;
2. James Anderson - b. 1860; and
3. Louisa (Anderson) Peterson - b. 1864.
The Stender's were German / Danish and the Anderson's were Danish but they all immigrated to the United States from Denmark. The family settled in Adams and Cass counties in Iowa.

Cumberland Enterprise - Last Sunday marked the close of the earthly career of Mrs. Anna Sophia Anderson, aged 81 years, 6 months and 10 days. The deceased lady passed away at the home of her son, James Anderson, west of the city, where she had made her home for a number of years. Her death was due principally to the incident of old age and was not unexpected for she had been confined to her bed for several months and had gradually grown weaker until the end came.
The funeral services were held Wednesday morning at the home of James Anderson and conducted by Rev. J. W. Wright of the Methodist church of this city. Interment was made in the cemetery at Victoria Center.
The deceased whose maiden name was Ott, was born in Mecklenburg, Germany on December 25, 1815 where she grew to womanhood. She was twice married, her first husband being Joachim (Youcum) Stender. To them were born four sons, three of whom are living, Louis of Cumberland, Iowa, Charles of Keytesville, Missouri and John of Eton, Colorado. Her second husband, was Soren Anderson, and by this marriage three children were born, James and Peter of this city and Mrs. Louisa Peterson of Haynes, North Dakota. Her husbands and two sons have preceded her to the other world.
In 1867 Mrs. Anderson and her family removed to America, locating in Illinois where they resided until 1873 when they came to Adams county, Iowa settling near Mt. Etna. There she resided until within the past few years when she had lived with her son.
