Joshua is the beloved son of George Allen Kirkman and Jane Elizabeth McCuen, beloved brother of Benjamin Isaac Kirkman.
He was born in Fort Hood, TX and grew up in Greenville, S.C., Titusville, Fla., NAS Sigonella, Sicily and Sullivan, Indiana.
A 1995 graduate of Greenville High School, he also attended The SC Governors School for the Arts, Writing Program, The Fine Arts Center of The Greenville County Schools. In 1995, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps.
He was a 2001 graduate of St. John's College having earned a BA degree, taught at the Quangdong College of Foreign Language and Arts in Guangzhou, China from 2001-2003 and earned an MA degree in International Security from Denver University School of International Studies with additional study in Beijing, China. He had began working on an MA degree from USC Moore School of Business International Program- China Track.
Josh was a reporter in the Washington, DC bureau for The Asahi Shimbun Japanese Newspaper. In August 2009, he began working with Alain Charles Publishing, LTD in Beijing, China and was editing the 2010 edition of their Business Travel Guide, engaged in researching Shanxi province.
Joshua loved "travel in large doses" which included Europe, Eastern Europe, Russia, China (east and west), Vietnam, Thailand, Laos, Uzbekistan and Turkey.
He is the namesake of his grandfather, Alva Irvin, buried nearby.
