Mary was the daughter of Eugene Stollenwerck and Estelle "Tellie" Siddons and was born on a plantation near Uniontown, Alabama. She had two brothers named Harry A. and Jack Waddell. The Stollenwerck's were a prominent Uniontown family. Estelle Siddons Stollenwerck, was a refined, lovely, and charming woman of the Old South. Mary Gaston's family were people of culture and social distinction. Her grandfather had died, leaving his wife a beautiful old Southern plantation and four hundred and fifty slaves to be looked after. On June 17, 1908, Mary married a twenty-four year old widower named Robert Reynolds Davis Jones, Sr. (whom she had met as a choir member at a revival he preached at in Uniontown, Alabama) after a one year courtship. She was converted in one of his meetings. He was the 11th of 12 children in the family of William Alexander (Alex) Jones and Georgia Creel. Dr. Bob Sr.'s father was a Methodist and his mother, a Primitive Baptist. Both parents had died by the time he was 17. He was converted at the age of 11 in a rural Methodist Episcopal (South) church, and immersed in a nearby creek. Dr. Bob Sr. was an American, Christian, Fundamentalist, evangelist, broadcaster, and founder of Bob Jones University. They settled in Birmingham where he continued his work as an evangelist. Mary and Bob Sr.'s only child, Bob Jones, Jr. was born October 19, 1911 in Montgomery.
