Mary Dillon Lippincott
Birth: Apr. 1, 1825
Pennsylvania, USA
Death: Apr. 28, 1863
Adams County
Pennsylvania, USA

Unverified family records indicate that Mary Dillon was wed to John Lippincott on April 14, 1844. On an 1860 map of Adams County there is a very small water course named "Lippencot Spring" that comes down off of South Mountain and feeds the headwaters of the Conewego. This is on PA 234 about 3/4 of a mile North from U.S. Highway 30 running west out of Gettysburg. Here John and Mary raised their family. Besides farming grain, John may have also been a charcoal maker, as the area is well covered today in second growth trees. Their union begat the following;

Mary Lippincott died on April 17, 1863, three weeks after the death of her thirteenth delivery (and eighth loss of a child). She had just passed her 38th birthday. Ten weeks later Confederate General R. E. Lee's Army was to march by on the pike from Chambersburg to enter the Battle of Gettysburg. It is said that wounded rebels were tended to on the Lippincott farm and in the house. John moved to Ohio and married and fathered three more children, all sons.
Many Dillons rest in this lovely cemetery. Any marker for Mary Lippincott's grave may have long since disintegrated or been lost. The exact location is also unknown as there was a bad fire of the Church building in the early part of the 20th century that destroyed most of the Sexton's records.
