Sydney Coxon was a beautiful, active, out-going fifth grader who loved her friends, swimming, and playing soccer, when she was diagnosed with a brainstem glioma, a rare inoperable brain tumor, in 2005. After thirteen months of treatment, including radiation and experimental therapies, she succumbed to the tumor when she was just eleven years old. During that year, she continued to go to school as much as possible, performed in a play at summer camp, and went on a Make-a-Wish Disney cruise with her family. Even in her last months, she thought of others, and was planning a community garage sale so Seattle Children's Hospital could purchase another voice machine like the one that helped her communicate. Her community carried out this event a few months after she passed away. Her friends and family went on to found the Pink Polka Dots Junior Guild, which continues to raise money for brain cancer research in her memory.
