He attended schools in North Dakota, including one year at Bottineau Forestry College. On New Year's Eve, he met Wilma Peterson at a neighborhood gathering. They were married on Oct. 18, 1940 in a double ceremony with her brother and his bride at the farm home near Maddock, N.D.
Mr. and Mrs. Brown moved to Bingen in 1942 and then to Underwood in January of 1943. They raised six children in the Gorge area and Mr. Brown started working in the timber industry. He also worked for a short time at Underwood Fruit before returning to logging, working for Broughton, Jay Hawes and for himself as a timber faller.
In 1972, he retired from logging and bought a secondhand store in White Salmon. The couple moved the business to Bingen and called it "Brown's Bargains." He ran the store until 1983, when he closed the business.
Mr. Brown loved woodworking and vegetable gardening. He enjoyed music and played the piano and keyboard. He made musical instruments out of wood. He loved being outdoors.
