Jess was born in Garland, Texas after his parents arrived from Wilson County, Tennessee. He lived and farmed near his parents near what is now the location of Kraft Foods at Forest Lane and Shiloh. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, and a director of the Garland Chamber of Commerce. In the late 1940's, Jess and Nannie moved into the city of Garland and built their home at 1215 W. Garland Ave. For several years they won prizes from the Chamber of Commerce for their Christmas decorations. After farming, Jess opened Jess Corley Real Estate located across from Garland High School. He bought and sold real estate and managed many rental properties until his death.
