Robert was the son of Kentucky natives James and Mary Agnes Gilliam. One document shows He was born in Dubuque, Iowa; but His enlistment papers signed by himself, shows he was born in Davenport, Iowa.

On Sept. 3, 1864 in Warrenton, Missouri, Robert enlisted for 1 year in the Union Army and served as a Private with Co. "D" - 49th Regiment Missour Infantry. At the time of His enlistment, He was 17 years old, worked as a Farmer and received a $100 Bounty for enlisting. He was described as a 5'10" tall, gray eyes, light hair and a fair complexion. On Sept. 13, 1865, Robert was mustered into service and sent to South River Township, Warren Co., Missouri for duty. He was mustered out of the military on Aug. 2, 1865 in Benton Barracks, Missouri.

On May 14, 1892, Robert registered to Vote in Fresno Co., California.

On Sept. 27, 1908, Robert filed for a Civil War Pension and sometime after this date, His pension application was approved under Certificate #1151039.

On March 29, 1912, Robert was admitted to the Soldiers' Home in Sawtelle, Los Angeles Co., California.

1915 Fresno, CA. City Directory:
Sarah was living at 727 Mildreda in Fresno, CA. This verifies that Elizabeth and Sarah are the same person but it shows her as a widow of R.W. Gilliam. Robert didn't die until 1927.

Sarah is living at 715 University in Fresno, California. This address was the address of their daughter, Lillian Sunderland.

On Oct. 21, 1927, Robert passed away at the Sawtelle Soldiers' Home in Los Angeles Co., California. On a document from the home, it shows his wife's name as Elizabeth, which could be another name for Sarah. His personal affects were given to his daughter, Lillian (Mrs. A. E. Sunderland) of Fresno Co., California.
