There's a saying that people shouldn't anthropomorphize their pets, that is, impute human characteristics to them that don't exist. But pet owners know that pets actually excel at what people should possess: loyalty, devotion, and companionship.

Fritzie was all that and more. If pictures tell a thousand words, then these photos say it all. Just look at her eyes, her expressions, her body language. Almost a match for Lassie!

But Fritzie grew old. One day, my father, the absolute family boss, decided that she should be taken to the vet and put to sleep. I barely had a chance to say goodbye. That night, I closed the door to my bedroom and began to sob. My father opened the door and I feared he'd scold me because he always said that guys do not cry. But instead, he sat down next to me and wept. Fritzie, even in death, was there to help us bond.

A pet is a person's best friend!

Addendum Friday, January 1, 2010:

Today, my betta, Max, passed. Ill for some time, he waited until the New Year. Animals have a sense about these things. Over the course of my life, in addition to Fritzie and Max, I've had the companionship of a turtle, several parakeets, and a school of African dwarf frogs. My flower today for Fritzie is in honor of all.
