UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS (CPL)
GARRETT COUNTY DEPUTY SHERIFF
SHOT AND KILLED IN THE LINE OF DUTY
On January 18, 1979 @ 5:25 AM Sheriff Livengood along with an Oakland police officer responded to an alarm at Davidson's Army-Navy store on Third Street. Riding in the back of Sheriff Livengood's cruiser was his K-9 dog "Sarge", a snow white German Shepherd that he had raised from a pup. He arrived at 5:27 AM and responded to the rear of the store as Oakland police officer Roger Lewis went to the front of the store and observed that the chains and padlock had been broken off the front door. The winter winds were howling so bad in the snowstorm that night that radio transmissions and other sounds were extremely difficult to hear. Sheriff Livengood transmitted that he was taking his K-9 out of the car to check the building and told Officer Lewis to stay in his car. Moments later gunshots rang out and a car sped from the scene which was witnessed by a resident exiting his home a short distance away. By the time Off. Lewis and the citizen reached the rear of the store, Sheriff Livengood had been shot a total of 7 times and K-9 "Sarge" was bleeding profusely from cuts caused by a samurai sword. Sheriff Livengood & "Sarge" died at the scene. Both suspects responsible were apprehended and convicted. Sheriff Livengood is survived by his wife and 2 children.
