Jimmie Wilkerson Gunnels, 76, of Lake Jackson passed away Thursday, May 14, 2009, at his home after a long battle with cancer.

Jim was born October 9, 1932, in Hanover, Texas. His family moved to Freeport during WWII and he attended the local high school. He left the area after graduation to serve as an Air Force medic during the Korean War. Following his service, he returned to Texas and eventually was the owner of an area "Shell" gas station after returning for good in 1975, when he opened Jim Gunnels Insurance Agency. He worked as an agent for Farmers Insurance until his retirement in December 2005. Jim married his wife, Pat Gunnels, in 1973 in Bay City, Texas.

Jim is survived by his wife, Delores "Pat" Gunnels; son, Nick Gunnels and his fiancée, Stacy Prince; sons, Chris Gunnels and Michael Martin; sister, Jean Dietz and her husband, Horace; sister-in-law, Frankie Gunnels; brother-in-law, Robert Maxwell and his wife, Lucille; and numerous nieces, nephews, other family members and many caring friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Tom and Alice Gunnels; and brothers, Talmadge (May 2004) and Tom C. Gunnels(November 2004).

Pallbearers will be Robert Davis, Mark Pekar, Chris Lobdell, Gary Krenek, B.J. Krenek and Danny Strauss.
