The 1860 Belle Vernon, Fayette Co., Pa. census lists 8 year old Martha Bowden living in household #83 with 4 year old Mary Bowden and 17 year old coal miner Lewis Bowden. Head of household is 78 year old Elizabeth Bowden, born in New Jersey. Three households away in #86 is 42 year old, England born Thomas Smith. He lives with his 45 year old wife, Parthena and 1 year old son, Edwin Smith. Also in the household are 14 year old Susan Rowden and 13 year old Elizabeth Rowden. Rowden is obviously a typo of Bowden. Parthenia Boden Smith is Martha Bowden's mother.
The 1870 census for South Versailles, Allegheny Co. lists a household with 46 year old Lathinia Smith as head. No Thomas is listed. The surnames of the rest of the household are simply "ditto'ed" as Smith. They are 24 year old Susan, 23 year old Elizabeth, 18 year old Martha, 14 year old Mary, 12 year old Edwin, 9 year old Bowman, 3/12 year old William, 7/12 year old Louisa and 21 year old Sarah. The census was dated June 8, 1870.
Martha Jane (Bowden) then married Samuel Behanna in Mckeesport, Pa. on June 11, 1870. They went on to have 10 children. Samuel died in 1899. The 1900 census for Carroll Township lists Martha as a widow, living in the household of one of her sons, Mell Behanna. Martha subsequently remarried a widower, Mr. Andrew J. Linn on Jan. 23, 1901. The 1910 census shows Martha living at 301 Prospect Ave., Donora with husband Andrew Linn, son James Carson Behanna and step-son Arthur Linn. Living next door is the household of Malvern Behanna. The 1920 census for Donora lists Martha (68) living at 217 Allen Ave. with husband Andrew (65), stepson Arthur (35, single) and son James Carson Behanna (27, divorced). Martha's place of birth is listed as Pa. Her father & mother's places of birth are listed as Germany and Maine, respectively.
Martha's death certificate states the following: she was born in Belle Vernon on Nov. 12, 1852; her father was Nathanial Sphar, born in Pa. and her mother was Parthena Bowden, born in Pa.; she was married to Andy J. Linn, housekeeping, living at 217 Allen Ave., Donora, at the time of her death; the undertaker was J. A. Rabe. She was buried in Gilmore Cemetery. (Info courtesy of Mary Pifer and Terry Cook)
