He was blessed by being reared in a Christian home, and when a young man united with the Methodist church of Cedar Creek, McDonough, Illinois.

At the age of 21 he was united in marriage to Arabell Charter and to this union were born eight children, the wife and one son having preceded him to the great beyond. The greatest part of his life was spent in Illinois. The last thirty years were spent in and around Albia.

On May 12, 1899, Jacob was described as 5'7", 137 lbs, gray hair, brown eyes, a mustache, and with a scar on his left eyebrow.

Those left to mourn his departure are his four sons and three daughters, namely: Fred of Albia, Iowa; Will of Blakesburg, Iowa; Hobart of Ottumwa, Iowa; Mrs. Grace Powers of Los Angeles, California; Mrs. Hattie Kennedy of LaJunta, Colorado, and Mrs. Alta McHendry of Blakesburg, Iowa, besides six brothers, two sisters, twenty-eight grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends. Jacob outlived his son, Willis.

His funeral services were held from Bethel church ten miles east of Albia at 2:30 o'clock Tuesday, April 3. A goodly number of Albians accompanied the relatives to the church. Rev. B. W. Pettit conducted the services. Mr. and Mrs. Nobby Wilkinson sang appropriate songs. Many beautiful flowers were placed upon his casket. His body was laid to rest in the cemetery near Bethel church, there to await the last call.
