Around 1850, he moved with his family to Iowa, settling in Keokuk County.
On December 25, 1855, he married Dianna Craft in Wapello County, Iowa. They had three children: Caswell, Eli and Sarah Jane.
John joined Company H of the 36th Iowa Infantry Regiment on August 11, 1862 to fight in the Civil War. Serving with his brother, Jacob , they were captured in the Battle of Mark's Mill in Arkansas, and then marched in 24 hours to Camp Ford in Tyler, Texas.
On Sep 19, 1864, John died from diarrhea.
His body was eventually moved to Alexandria National Cemetery in Alexandria, Louisiana.
