Col William Searight
Birth: Dec. 5, 1791
Carlisle
Cumberland County
Pennsylvania, USA
Death: Aug. 12, 1852
Searights
Fayette County
Pennsylvania, USA

William Searight (born 1791) was the son of William Seawright (born 1753) and Jean Ramsey Seawright. His siblings were Samuel, Alexander, Mary, John, Hamilton and Archibald. William was the first to adopt the spelling of Searight rather than Seawright.

William came with his parents to Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, where he learned the business of fuller and dryer of cloth. In 1813 he moved to Fayette County, Pennsylvania.

Colonel William Searight married Rachel Brownfield on March 26, 1826, in Fayette County. Rachel was the daughter of Thomas Brownfield and Elizabeth Fisher. They raised a fine family of 6 children: Ewing Brownfield Searight, Jean R. Searight Shuman, Captain William Searight, James Allison Searight and Elizabeth Colvin Searight.

An OBITUARY for William Searight was published on August 12, 1852, in The Genius of Liberty Newspaper, Uniontown, Pennsylvania and contributed to the Fayette County Genealogy Project. It reads as follows:

DEATH of Mr. Searight ~
We stop the press, after having printed off some of our papers, to perform a most painful duty - to announce the death of Col. William Searight, of this county, who had been confined to his bed over five weeks with chronic diarrhea which baffled the skill of the most eminent physicians in the county, and terminated Mr. Searight's existence this morning about 7 o'clock.
Again has the unerring dart of death been aimed at a shining mark, and cut down one of the purest and best of men, and one whose death will cause a gloom to hang over the community at large. ~ Although of humble fortune, his untiring energy and perseverance supplied the place of a patrimony; and by his moral worth he rose to command a position in society that few men attain.

Note: Information in this memorial has been taken from a book ~ The Searight Family, established in America by William Searight. The author of this book was James A. Searight, Uniontown, Pennsylvania, 1893. Other sources of information are from US Census records and from Fayette County Pennsylvania Vital Statistics and obituaries.

As a husband; he was affectionate, devoted, and attentive; as a father, watchful, kind, and indulgent; and as a friend; firm, abiding, and sincere His social qualities endeared him to his friends, his integrity won him the confidence of his fellow citizens and neighbors; and a consciousness of the rectitude of his life, gave him assurance of immortality. In his death, the community has lost a valuable, enterprising, and good citizen; his family a worthy head; and the poor a benefactor--His heart was always free to forgive and forget grievances; and his purse was always open to charitable and worthy objects. Those who knew him best loved him most; and now that he has been cut down, ripe in years and honored in society, they mourn over his remains. In truth, a good if not a most inestimable man has failed and we clothe our columns in mourning upon making an announcement so much to be lamented.
Mr. Searight was born in the year 1792, in Cumberland County, in this state, and emigrated to this county at an early age where he has resided until his death.
His remains will be placed in their last resting place at the Grace Church burying ground near his late residence on tomorrow, at 3 o'clock, P.M., by the Masonic Fraternity, of which he was an honored and esteemed member. We deeply sympathize with his family and relatives in their irreparable loss, and offer them the condolence of the community...June Edition.
