Robert Scholl, aka Bob Scholl, was the north American lead singer of the fifties' doo wop band at first called "The Mellotones". After their first release under the herald label, titled "Tonite tonite", they changed their name into "The Mello-kings". Their first single, though it didn't reach the top in the United States charts, it is still considered to be one of the most durable doo wop hits of the fifties. The original group was formed in 1956 by Robert Scholl, aka Bob, first tenor, his younger brother Jerry, high tenor, Neil Arena, baritone, Eddie Quinn, second tenor, and Larry Esposito, bass, at the George Wahington high school, which also saw, among its students, the singer Frankie Lymon, with his musical group. The mello-kings were considered to be one of the blackest-sounding white groups in the 50's. The band continued to sing until 1969 and during the time their members changed. Unfortunately, Bob Scholl died during a boat accident in New York but his brother Jerry is still active in singing with other members even if the name of his band has remained the same.
