Son of Howard (Sr) and Jessie (Hafford) Hawley. He was born in Portland, Oregon in 1914, the third child born to this family. Howard Jr, along with his family, was quarantined at their home 63 W. Church Street for a number of months when the family contracted Scarlet Fever... this was an illness that would plague him in years to come, leading to heart issues and severe arthritis.
In the early 1920s, the family moved to Columbus, Ohio, residing at the Hafford Family home. Howard attended the Northwood Ave. School until the family relocated to a farm (1922) in Harlem TWP, Delaware County, Ohio.
A graduate of Center Village High School, he left Harlem TWP, Delaware, Ohio for Columbus after 1932 to work for his Uncle, Chester Hawley Sr at his store. He later took training as a machinist at a local technical school, establishing him in a profession he would remain at until his retirement.
In 1943 Howard met a divorcee, recently arrived to Columbus, through friends. A year later Howard and Ruth Kasefang were married... it was a marriage that would last until his death.
Howard worked for several machining companies before retiring from the Mechanical Engineering Dept. at The Ohio State University in Columbus. Howard was very gifted in wood and metal craft. He enjoyed shooting, fishing and gardening.
Although facing physical difficulties in his declining years, he always made time for his family and remains a beloved father and grandfather.
