|Birth: ||1770, Ireland|
|Death: ||Apr., 1847|
John Hawley, born about 1770 in Ireland (suspected in Northern Ireland). John came to North America at a young age, first appearing on Census Records in Antrim TWP, Franklin County, Pennsylvania. Records lead one to suspect his father may have been Dennis Hawley (Holly on Census Records), as Dennis is the only Hawley on the records prior to John's appearance.
John married Anne Gregory prior to 1807 in Pennsylvania and at least two children were born near Greencastle, Pennsylvania. John was the father of Margaret Hawley Wood, Gregory Hawley, Ann Hawley, John Hawley Jr, George Hawley, Dr. Samuel Hawley, Elizabeth Hawley and Harvey Hawley.
By trade he was a Weaver and Farmer. John lived near Canton, Ohio from around 1813 to 1825 before moving to Union County, Ohio. Tax records indicate he bought around 400 acres of land, in woods, between Milford Center and Marysville in Union County, Ohio on the Buck Run watercourse. John cleared and farmed this land, along what is now Route 4 very successfully until old age.
His wife Anne died in June of 1846 and he died sometime between then and April 1847. He declared his last will and testament in January 1845, one can assume due to the increasing age or declining health of he and his wife. Most of his children received a very health bequest of money and land.
He was originally buried in the Marysville Cemetery. His body, along with his wife and daughter Elizabeth were moved to Oakdale Cemetery in 1903. No marker exists for John, but the very weathered markers for his wife and daughter remain, indicating the burial location of these pioneers of Union County and Ohio.
