|Birth: ||Dec. 22, 1851|
|Death: ||Apr. 1, 1927|
Born to George and Mary (Davis) Hawley, both pioneers of Union County, Ohio. Father of Perry Delano, Daisy May, Howard Earl and Chester George Hawley. Husband of Addie (Smith) Hawley. Family stories indicate he was named after US politician Columbus Delano.
DJ grew up on the old Hawley Farm on Buck Run near Milford Center, Ohio, a farm that his grandfather John Hawley Sr and his sons carved out of the wilderness of Ohio in the late 1820s. As a child DJ took part in the local agricultural and county fairs, as evidenced by several mentions in the Marysville Tribune for placing in various contests. While it is not known for sure, it can be assumed that DJ had little chance or little interest in inheriting a spot on the family farm because by the time of his father's death he was working as a butcher in Milford Center.
DJ worked many years as a butcher near Milford Center, Ohio, both owning his own establishment and operating Meat Markets for others. A few years after the death of his father, DJ moved to Columbus, Ohio, where he operated a grocery at 135 W. 5th Avenue in Columbus during the early 1890s. By 1900 he operated a dairy, known as the Maple Grove Dairy north of Clintonville in Columbus, Ohio.
DJ was retired for a number of years at the time of his death. He died at his home, 70 W. Northwood Ave in Columbus around 11:30 PM on April 1, 1927.... a home which was bought for him by his son, Chester Hawley. He was buried in the plot he purchased in 1919 in Union Cemetery on April 4, 1927.
