Etta Luella (Gibbons) Coe Williams was a very special matriarch. She was the daughter of Phineas Lyman Gibbons and his wife Hannah Maria Norton. She insisted that her mother's middle name be pronounced like the wind they called Mariah, not like it appeared. She was proud to be a tenth generation descendant of Mayflower passenger Richard Warren, through her lineage to Peter Gibbons of Granville, Massachusetts, the son of Elizabeth (Warren) Gibbons who was the daughter of Rebecca (Church) Warren, the daughter of Caleb Church, the son of Elizabeth (Warren) Church, the daughter of Richard Warren, passenger of the Mayflower. She was a natural teacher, which profession she followed upon graduation from Westfield High School, Westfield, Massachusetts.
She met and married a meat cutter, Edwin Jason Coe, and had five children with him. She was left a widowed mother of four soon after the loss of their infant son. Her parents helped with the children so she could return to school to refresh teaching credentials to support herself and her children. She taught at Russellville School in Southampton and Middle Farms School in Westfield, Massachusetts. In 1919 she married her second husband, Edward Williams, who left her a widow again in 1954. She was active in her community and served as president of the Ladies Auxiliary of Sons of Union Veterans. She was also a member of the Southampton Grange. She was talented in many areas, but her talented crochet work was most memorable and her candied watermelon rind pickle was incredibly sweet with the flavor of whole cloves. She lived a long and productive life. When she died at the age of 102, she was well remembered by those who wrote her obituaries.
