William Jenning Van Meter was born in Waverly,Pike County, Ohio. On 17 May 1908 to: Mr. William Clinton "Clint" Van Meter (1865-1951) and Flora Belle Wilburn Legg (1872-1931)He comes from the great immigrant, pioneer family of Van Meteren,Van Matre, Van Metre and Van Meters. This family has had men and it's woman in all the Wars that made America,America! He was raised in a rural farming community, one of 7 children.(6 boys and 1 girl)He had a relationship to Miss Lena Dell McCoy two sons born to this union one died due to prematurity and one a couple months old.A common law marriage with Adriane Reeder,which left 6 children (2 boys and 4 girls).
He fought in World War II in Navy 7-14-1943 till 11-25-1945,Honorable discharge,Seaman 1C SV6 USNR-ratings held AS,S2C,A1C-Remarks:Point System- American Theater Asiatic-Pacific Philippine Liberation European-African Victory Bar-Foreign/sea service World War II.
He moved from Ohio after WWII to live with Adriane Reeder in Brooklyn, New York. He worked for Ford motor co.,was a doorman for Willoughby Apartments downtown Brooklyn till he retired.He loved cigars,his pipes, beer and lottery tickets.Collected old coins and loved talking about his family in Ohio.Sweet,quite,simple man who loved his children. Enjoyed fishing off the piers in Brooklyn and visited his family in Ohio frequently.He died at Methodist Hospital, 7th Ave 5th St.,Bklyn,NY after a long illness and age on 31 May 1990.
He had been living with his youngest daughter Debra Jean. He was buried in Sec.C-Block 6-Row F-Grave #3 & 4,Lot 38,Plot D at Forest Green Park.
