Roy Lee Howard was born June 9, 1925, Childress, Texas. Roy Lee served in the 6th Infantry Division, Red Star Unit. He served 306 days of combat: 87 of those days on New Guinea Island, and 219 consecutive days of combat on Luzon, Philippine Islands, before the war ended. He served in the field artillery unit and tells about how the division had fired 245,000 rounds of artillery totaling almost 13,000,000 pounds of "flying death". And he was barely 20 years old! After the war, Roy returned to Childress and married Freddie Sue Musgrove February 9, 1946. Freddie Sue was born September 19, 1924 in Dennis, Texas. Roy and Freddie Sue celebrated their 63rd anniversary in 2009, their home of 48 years.
Roy recounts memories of his father's "fish stories of the mighty Red River". The river would rise during rainy weather and as it would recede; catfish could be caught in the shallow places. It seems many of the male population of the territory would seine fish for a big fish fry in the town. Apparently, William had caught a 40 pound catfish and was able to put the brail rope through the gills and although he was unable to swim well, still held on to save his catch! This probably occurred under the Red River Railroad Bridge where many activities took place. That was also, the place where the young people would walk as they enjoyed their Sunday afternoons. It continued to be the only "swimming pool" for young people for the following 100 years. May still be!!!
After an extended illness, Roy died March 22, 2009, with Freddie by his side. Survivors include his wife Freddie Sue; a daughter, Sharlotte Nordell of Jacksboro; a son, Frank Howard of Claude; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Roy was one of those special individuals who stays in your heart, long after they are gone. The world is a better place by his having lived, and memories go on in his absence. Roy-- RIP
