Capt Joshua Todd Byers
Birth: Apr. 15, 1974
South Carolina, USA
Death: Jul. 23, 2003
Baghdad, Iraq

Army Capt. Byers was assigned to Fox Troop, 2nd Squadron, 3rd Armored Calvary Regiment, Fort Carson, Colorado. Byers was killed in action when his convoy hit an explosive device east of Baghdad. Joshua was the son of North American missionaries Lloyd and Mary Byers and a committed Southern Baptist lay leader. He was a 1996 graduate of the U.S. Military Academy, as an accomplished soldier, an admired officer, a warm-hearted funny friend and a devoted family man. He received the Bronze Star Medal with V device, for valor, and the Purple Heart for being wounded in Iraq. He loved his men and would do anything to keep them alive. To keep his troops’ spirits high in Iraq, for example, Byers bought a bunch of chickens and ordered his men to “dress them up and prepare to race them”. As the races began, there was Josh using a fly swatter to urge his chicken on to greatness. Joshua is survived by his wife, Kim.
