Candace Elizabeth Newmaker
Birth: Nov. 19, 1989
Lincolnton
Lincoln County
North Carolina, USA
Death: Apr. 18, 2000
Golden
Jefferson County
Colorado, USA

The girl whose death insipired Colorado's "Candace's Law," which served to outlaw the controversial "rebirthing" therapy that killed her. She was born Candace Tiara Elmore to Angela and Todd Elmore. She was taken away and put into foster care as a young child and later adopted on June 14, 1996, by Jeanne Newmaker. Newmaker claimed Candace had attachment problems and took her to Colorado for the therapy. Wrapped head to toe in a blanket with 673 lbs. of adults on her 70 lb. body and pushing on her with pillows for over an hour, she begged for them to stop, begged for respite, told them she was sick and thought she was going to die. Even after she vomited, the therapist told her to "go ahead and die" and called her a "quitter." She died the following day in a Colorado hospital. The therapists got 16 years in prison, her adoptive mother was also charged in her death. (bio by: A Marine's Daughter)
