South Carolina, USA
A native of Purcellville, Virginia, Mrs. Kemp was a birthright Friend and eighth generation Quaker. Her Society of Friends ancestral birthright membership can be traced to the foundation era of George Fox in England. Her ancestors arrived in the colonies in 1673.
She grew up on the family dairy farm, which was a popular location for family and friends to gather for barn dances.
On her parents' 25th wedding anniversary, October 12, 1941, she married Walter Edward Kemp, Jr. She was the bookkeeper for the family business, Kemp's Electrical, Plumbing & Heating in Purcellville. She also worked at the Drug Fair for 10 years.
In 1987, Ruth and Walt retired to Lexington, South Carolina, to be closer to their son and grandchildren.
Ruth loved hummingbirds and flowers, especially gardenias. She was an avid reader and loved to work crossword puzzles. She was a quiet, loving soul with a beautiful smile and is truly missed.
She is survived by two children, two grandchildren, and one brother.
