Passed away from a hit and run drunk driver.
Gretel Maritza Martinez
Our angel came into this world on February 9, 1988 in Los Angeles, CA. God took her in the morning hours of May 21, 2011 in a hit and run accident by a drunk driver. Her light burned for a short 23 years, but her flame burned with intensity. Gretel was a woman filled with love and loyalty to her family and friends. She was the baby of the family yet brought the most energy and laughter to their lives. Her laugh was contagious and anytime spent with her was a guaranteed joyful moment.
She is survived by her father Nelson, mother Maritza, sister Violet, and brother Lewis. She attended Stine Elementary School, Thompson Jr. High, and graduated Class of 2006 from West High School. At Bakersfield College Gretel studied criminal justice with one thought in mind, to help troubled young people reform their lives. She worked at In-N-Out Burger where she was known for her free spirit and charismatic smile. One of her fondest memories was being crowned "Reina de la Ca? de Azucar" for a non-profit organization which provided relief and charity for those in need in El Salvador. In 2007, Gretel traveled to El Salvador to deliver the donations raised in the states and made an impact in the lives of those who met her. She was a dedicated daughter, sister, granddaughter, niece, cousin and friend. We will carry her memories in our heart until we see her again. Services for Gretel Martinez will be on Friday May 27, 2011 at St Joseph's Church on 1515 Baker Street at noon. www.bakersfield.com/obits
