George Washington Rose
Birth: Mar. 30, 1888
Philadelphia County
Pennsylvania, USA
Death: Apr. 9, 1984
Philadelphia County
Pennsylvania, USA

George Washington Rose was the only child born to William Lincoln Rose and Sarah ("Sallie") McCuen Rose. George was born at 2535 Collins Street in the Kensington section of Philadelphia, PA on the 30th of March, 1888. He was christened and brought up in the Free Church of St. John (Episcopalian), where he would remain a devoted parishioner throughout his life.

As a child, George suffered a serious bout of typhoid fever along with several other illnesses. He finished his formal education after completing grammar school and started work at 14. He continued his education through correspondence courses and obtained many certifications, eventually becoming a licensed electrican.

George married Annie Vollrath on January 19, 1916 and their union was blessed with two daughters: Florence Elizabeth and Doris Evelyn.

Always a great patriot, George had been unable to join the armed forces because of his health conditions. During the war years, he served his country as an inspector in the Philadelpha Navy Shipyard.

In his youth, George had played baseball for a Kensington team. It was the start of a lifelong love of the game. He closely followed his beloved Phillies season after season, listening to all the plays on his transister radio, then later on television. He rarely missed a game and was always up on the latest statistics.

He experienced severe arthritis later in life, eventually needing a cane and heavy leg braces to get around, but his demeanor never gave away the extent of the discomfort he felt. George always had a smile to share and never a compaint. A great lover of music and quite an accomplished whistler, he was never without a ditty to hum or whistle while he went about his daily routine. His heart was light and his manner was gentle. Laughter, song, and a smile all came easily to him. He had a deep love for God and family and a great joy for life. He was a generous and devoted friend to many.
