Michael T. McEachran Jr., 9, of Memphis, a forth grade student at Holy Rosary School, died at 7:45 a.m. Saturday at St. Jude's Research Hospital after a 20-month battle with cancer.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, where he was a communicant, with burial in Memorial Park. Memphis Funeral Home Poplar Chapel has charge.
After the cancer was diagnosed 20 months ago, the boy was steady in his determination to cope with it. The Shelby County Sheriff's Department class that was graduated June 4 was named in his honor and he was sworn in with the 42 new deputies. He was also an honorary member of the Sheriff's Department SWAT Team. His father, Sgt. Mike McEachran, is a sheriff's deputy.
During a weekend visit to see the St. Louis Cardinals play baseball in Pittsburgh, where his uncle lives, he was invited to watch the Pirates during batting practice. He met the players and was given a baseball by each of them. Asked by manager Jim Leland what he would do with all the balls, he said he was going across the playing field to have them autographed by his favorite team, St. Louis.
On a fishing trip to Lake Erie, he asked the guide the size of the boat they were on. The guide said "It's big enough, but you'll have to help us row." His reply: "Sir, I've only got one arm and I'm gonna be fishing with itů"
The youth had his left shoulder amputated in May 1986, and later had a spinal operation and amputation of eight inches of his left leg.
He was the son of Gayle and Mike McEachran of Memphis. He also leaves a sister, Cindy McEachran, his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles A. Loftiss Jr., and Mrs. Maxine T. McEachran, and his great-grandfather, Charles A. Loftiss, Sr., all of Memphis.
The boy's uncle, Angus McEachran, is editor of the Pittsburgh Press, A Scripps Howard newspaper, and former metropolitan editor of the Commercial Appeal.
The family asks that any memorials be made to Dream Makers Inc., of Nashville.
