WALKER -- George Raymond Walker, 96, passed through to be with the Lord on January 29, 2010. George was born June 11, 1913 in Niagara Falls, NY to James R. Walker and Mary (nee Lyle) Walker.
He was the second of four sons. George spent his early years growing up in Duquesne, PA. From there his family moved several times including stays in Florida, Georgia, Alabama, and Houston, TX. While living in Houston, George joined the Civilian Conservation Corp. The Corp brought him to New Mexico. He had many fond memories of working as a driller and working with dynamite while building roads in the Carlsbad and Jemez mountain areas in New Mexico. George was active in CCC Legacy, Chapter 141.
Served with the US Army during WWII.
After leaving the Army, he returned to Santa Fe, NM and worked as a heavy crane operator building the infrastructure for the Manhattan project in Los Alamos, NM.
May 18, 1945 he married the love of his life, Dorothy May Bonner, in Santa Fe, NM.
Moving to Albuquerque, George worked for the civil service at Kirtland Air Force Base as a heavy equipment mechanic.
Throughout his life George was active in the Baptist Church with his membership in several area churches including Heights and Del Norte Baptist Churches. He enjoyed discussing theological topics in Sunday School and working with youth.
Retiring in 1973, George enjoyed his retirement by traveling. A member of the Masons and the Eastern Star; belonging to Temple Lodge No. 6 AF & AM and Adah No. 5, OES where he and Dorothy served as Worthy Patron and Worthy Matron twice.
In January 2009 George was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. George fought a brave and gallant battle against the deadly disease.
George is preceded in death by his parents and three brothers. Survived by his wife of 64 years, Dorothy; five sons, James Wesely and wife Nena of Belchertown, MA., David George and wife Sallie of Albuquerque, Kenneth Leon of Albuquerque, Carl Lee and wife Cynthia of Tijeras, and Mark Lyle of Albuquerque; five grandchildren, and five great - grandchildren.
Burial at Sunset Memorial Park.
The services will be presided over by Pastor Robert Myers of Del Norte Baptist Church.
Members of the CCC Legacy Chapter 141 will serve as honorary pallbearers.
