*DIED FROM SUNSTROKE: J.W. Surface, a well known citizen of Oronogo, aged about 73 years, died night before last from the effects of being overcome by heat.
Mr. Surface had but one arm, but was industrious and very hale and hearty for one of his age. Monday he had been over to Hell's Neck and, missing his wagon, started out to walk home. The intense heat was too much for him and he died shortly after reaching home.

There is no marker for John or his wife on the Surface family plot...3 of their grandchildren are buried there, but the parents of these 3 are buried elsewhere in the cemetery, leading to the conclusion that John and Mary are buried in this family plot.
Grandpa Surface was a detailed craftsman, even with one arm....picture is of wooden balls, handcarved.
