Son of Randall & Nancy (Atchison) McCallister of Antrim, Ireland. He was born in Broughshane (Bru-Shane) Antrim, Ireland (as his father was) Nancy died just 7 days after his birth and John was raised by his father's sisters.

Surname was spelled: McAllister when John immigrated from Ireland (during the potato famine, 1848)
John donated money for part of the land for Harmony Cemetery and lived at the other end of the side road that faces the cemetery. He bought the prairie land for 1.25 an acre and turned it into farm land.
John's 1/2 sister, Mary McCallister, is buried in Holland Cemetery along with her family.
