Hugh Nunez
Birth: 1801
Georgia, USA
Death: Jul. 31, 1852
Appling County
Georgia, USA

Hugh Nunez, born in 1801, was one of 4 known children of Daniel Nunez, 1775-1815, and his wife Nancy. Some sources say that Daniel was arrived in Georgia at an early age from Virginia, but no sources have been given. Daniel Nunez was the great grandson of Dr. Samuel Nunez who arrived in Savannah in 1733 after fleeing Portugal for being persecuted as Jewish. His father, Samuel Nunez lived his entire life in Georgia.

One of Hugh's older brothers was Daniel A. Nunez, 1800-1885, who settled in or around Ware County, GA. Many of the descendants of Daniel A. Nunez changed the family name to Eunice at the end of the Civil War as did the descendants of Hugh's two youngest sons Jasper Vernon Eunice and Hughie Campbell Eunice.

Hugh Nunez was supposedly known to be a Primitive Baptist Minister, but more research is needed on this subject. The information that was published by Folks Huxford in the Pioneers of Wiregrass Georgia is not entirely accurate. His first wife was Jane "Jincy" Wilson, widow of Samuel Carter. They were married in Dec.1820 in Tattnall Co., GA. There was 4 children born to this marriage:

Phillip Hugh Nunez ( CSA) 1822-1864
Nancy Ruth Nunez 1825- ?
Robert Flournoy Nunez 1826-1868
Sarah Ann Jane Nunez 1830-1909

Following the death of his first wife, Hugh Nunez married Sarah Campbell, daughter of John Campbell. To this marriage was born 7 children:

George W. "Neeny" Nunez 1842-1870
Frances W Nunez 1844-?
Mary Caroline Nunez 1846-?
Jasper Vernon Nunez ( Eunice ) 1847-1909
Newton C. Nunez 1845-1860
Sarah Angeline Nunez 1850-?
Hughie Campbell Nunez ( Eunice) 1852-1940

Hugh Nunez died on July 31, 1852 at the age of 51. His large estate, which bordered the Altamaha River, was eventually sold at public auction in January 1856. He was buried at a cemetery near Staffords Ferry Crossing. It is unlikely that the cemetery is still in existence. Staffords Ferry was located not too far east of the present day Lanes Bridge on Highway 121, between Appling and Tattnall Counties.

The information below is taken from Pioneers of Wiregrass Georgia, Huxford.

Hugh Nunez was born in Georgia in 1801, son of Daniel and Nancy Nunez . He grew up in Wayne and Tattnall counties, and after arriving of age went to Appling County where he married and afterward lived. He was married twice. His first wife was Sarah Virginia Carter, born abt. 180 6, S. C., daughter of Richard Carter. She died Feb. 9, 1841, in Appling County. By her four children were born:

1. Phillip Hugh b. 1823, m. Elizabeth Watts. Died in C.S. Army, May 15 , 1864.
2. Nancy Ruth b. 1825, m. Stephen Miller. Moved to New Orleans, La.
3. Robert Flournoy b. 1827, m. Annabelle Holt Croft. Died 1868, Tampa , Fla.
4. Sarah Jane b. 1830, m. John Wildes.

The second marriage was in November, 1842, to Sarah Campbell, born 181 6, daughter of John Campbell, an early settler of Appling County. By her seven children were born:

5. George W. b. 1842, never married.
6. Frances E. b. 1844, m. Elbert M. T. Smith.
7. Mary Caroline b. 1846, m. David Young.
8. Jasper V. b. 1847, m. Ruthy --------
9. Newton C. b. 1848, m. (unknown).
10. Sarah Angeline b. 1850, m. Henry Rush.
11. Hugh C. b. 1851, m. Theodosia Patterson, dau. of Abr.

Mr. Nunez died in Appling July 31, 1852, and his widow was appointed administrator of his estate. She later married John McPherson about 1854, and had three more children. She was succeeded in the administration of the Nunez estate by John Overstreet, who sold at public sale in January, 1856, the Nunez lands consisting of lots of land 446, 453, 47 4, west half of 452 and fractional lot 451, all in the 3rd district of Appling County, known as "Upper Sisters" Bluff, also lot 118 in the 2nd district. The estate was evidently a large one.
