Ambrose, son of William Martin and Jane Michael, grew up and was educated in Ohioville, Beaver County, Pennsylvania. He learned the carpenter trade at a young age.
He married Mary Ross Duncan, daughter of Charles Duncan and Abigail Timms, 14 Oct 1845 in Meigs County, Ohio.
In 1855, Ambrose and Mary left Pennsylvania and moved on to Bedford Township (ten miles from Fairfield) in Illinois where Ambrose farmed and practiced his carpentry trade for the next 5 years. In 1860, Jeffersonville, Wayne County, Illinois (now known as Geff, Illinois) became their home. In 1882, they moved to Eldorado, Kansas.
In 1889 they were living in Lexington Township, Kansas. Records indicate they stayed there only two years before moving on to Santa Anna, California.
Eight children were born to Ambrose and Mary; three lived to be adults... Abbie Jane Martin who married Matthias B. Ulm, Della Amanda Martin who married William Kester Snyder and Arthur Middleton Martin, who disappeared in about 1880 and was never heard from again.
