Norbert Joseph Becquet was the son of John Baptiste Becquet and Aglae Forestier. His parents left France in 1889 and settled in the Chicago, Illinois for only a brief time. After Norbert was born, they moved a little further south, settling in Morris, Grundy County, Illinois. Between 1895 and 1898, they left Illinois, moving to Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Norbert enjoyed living there and made friends with the Native American Indians who came down from their mountain reservation to sell their jewelry and other Indian trinkets. Norbert would buy their jewelry and then sell it to local stores. When he was in his teen years, Norbert would take people on tours through Cave of the Winds and other sites in the Colorado Springs area, using his ‘Jenny mules'.
In 1907, Norbert moved with his parents to Garden City, Kansas, where he lived the remainder of his life. There he married Emma Jane Dufrin, daughter of Edward Carry Dufrin and Malinda Landry, on 19 Oct 1909. In 1927, he owned and operated an Automobile Tire store in Garden City at 104 E. Fulton, but he spent the majority of his working years as a racehorse trainer and stockman. For a few years he owned a resale shop in Taos, New Mexico. Norbert had a gift of ‘story telling'. His family heard many stories about the friendship he developed with the Taos Pueblo Native American Indians.
After he retired in the late 1960's, Norbert started a small dog breeding business in his back yard which kept him busy during his years of ill health.
Surviving were his wife, Emma; two sons, William Forestier Becquet and Dr. Norbert Becquet; one daughter, Albertine Willard and 2 grandchildren, Kathye Snyder-Knight and Ronald K. Snyder.
A funeral service was held for Norbert on 13 December 1975 at the Phillips-White Funeral Home in Garden City, Kansas.
