Betty Zane was a very sweet lady whom everyone loved. Even though she was six years younger than me she was married to my uncle C.F. Newton and she seemed more like my younger sister than an aunt.
She was loved by all who knew her and will be greatly missed.

Betty Zane Berry went to meet Jesus at 7 a.m. on a beautiful Easter Morning on April 24, 2011 at her home on Jenkins Hill in Sumner, Miss. after a brief illness. She was surrounded by family and friends and her beloved animals.
She was born Betty Zane Jenkins on September 23, 1929 the 13th child of Wiley Zachariah "Boone" and Nancy Ellen "Ella" Jenkins. She grew up on Cassidy Bayou on Jenkins Hill where the Jenkins settled their land over 150 years ago, the first family to arrive in Sumner before the town was established. They had to travel to Friars Point by wagon to buy supplies which was approximately a one week journey.
Betty Zane met her first husband Charles Freeland Newton, Sr. at a Halloween party on Halloween night in 1945 and they were married the following year in November. They had three children; Charles Freeland, Jr. Deborah Anne and Delilah Zane. She later married John Berry from Helena, Ark. where she lived until she returned to her beloved Jenkins Hill 30 years ag
Betty Zane went to nursing school when she was 55 years old and was a nurse at Greenbough Nursing Center for over 20 years. She touched innumerable lives with her soft voice sweet smile and contagious laughter. She was very active in the Little Theatre in Clarksdale with roles in Joseph and the Multicolored Dream Coat, Arsenic and Old Lace, and starred as Big Mama twice in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. The name remained with her and she was from then on called Big Mama by her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She told God in a prayer that she wanted to take care of the animals in Heaven. A few days later, cats began to arrive home on Jenkins Hill where they still remain.
Mrs. Berry is survived by her brother Lloyd Wiley Jenkins and sister Eva Louise Thomas. She is also survived by her children Charles Freeland Newton, Jr. Delilah Zane Hollis and her son-in-law Richard Carl Hollis, her grandchildren Charles Freeland Newton III, Benjamin Lewis Newton, Sara Elizabeth Newton, Cassie Newton, Shannon Zane Brower, Ron Brower and Dylan Brower. Her great grandchildren are Garrett Zane Cattledge, Marley Newton, Soloman Newton, Gabriel Rayne Noland, Aila Newton, Devlin Newton, Noah Allen Brower and Zachariah Jackson Brower. She also leaves behind her best friend for many years Judy Jabr and her beloved dog Angel and cat John Lennon who were her constant companions for many years.
She was preceded in death by her daughter Deborah Anne, sister Hazel, brothers; Eber, Neville, Felix, Weldon, Kinch and Joe Fred Jenkins.
Visitation will be held from 6 - 8 p.m., Thursday, April 28 at meredith-Nowell Funeral Home in Clarksdale.
Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m., Friday, April 29 at Sumner Baptist Church in Sumner, Miss. Burial will follow in at Jenkins Cemetery on Jenkins Road in Sumner, Miss.
