Daddy had been getting around pretty well on his own within a few months after mom passed. Lee, the kids and I (I had been at my parents home from the night my mom passed) had moved in after dad refused to consider living with us in Houston County, for that matter anywhere but the house he and my parents shared. Dad told us his and moms wishes that the house and land be ours. We started adding on and just about did a complete remodel of my childhood home. Daddy loved being apart of it, and watching everyone and everything as it happened. Daddy no longer just sat in his recliner but took walks to the mailbox and sat on the front porch just enjoying the beauty of everything. He had 2 eye surgeries earlier this year and when his sugar levels and blood pressure was controlled seemed able to get around better and see things a little clearer.
In September daddy's knee was looking pretty bad, we thought it was from a fall. October 4th daddy fell in bathroom and I called 911 to take him to hospital. After two days we found that he had a bad infection in the knee and leg, he had surgery the following day and a wound vac was placed on his knee. Daddy spent two weeks in the hospital where he kept telling me to take him home or he was going to die there. (Daddy disliked hospitals, always had) I started working on the Doctor's to reduce his pain medicine (thinking it was causing him to think he was going to die) so he was a little more clear to talk to and when he was off the medicines he still told me the same. So I got him discharged, and home we went with health nurses. They came 4 times a week. They were all great! Daddy had to have a hospital bed due to his congestive heart failure and kidney failure. I was able to give him baths and change his bed even with him in it as well as it helped reduce his body fluids causing his edema. All in all daddy stayed in his right state of mind, shared stories with us, watched TV with him in his room on the big screen, didn't miss a beat!
A little time passed and due to daddy choosing not to go back into hospital, and still needing nursing care we went with hospice. (Dr. wouldn't approve until daddy made it clear to him what he wanted) Hospice was great, he loved all the nurses!
They helped us a lot! (Dad only had them for 6 days, in which they actually got to visit him 3 times)
Thanksgiving Day came, I got dad up, he needed no pain medicines at all, breathing was good, he knew it was Thanksgiving and wanted to be in the kitchen with the action. After his bath I wheeled him into kitchen where he stayed and watched us cook, Lee carve the Turkey, Khory was washing all dishes behind us as we messed them up, Kaylee making desserts, and Kaden and I making dumplings just for him.(there almost weren't any, and daddy said "Sharon we need dumplings") He loved dumplings and had taught me himself to make them years prior on Thanksgiving. The last thing daddy said was "I wish I could be with your moma". Daddy was sleeping in his wheel chair and didn't want anything to eat so I took him and put him in his recliner in his room, where just a little while later he went to meet Jesus and be with my mom.
I miss my mom and my dad, I love them both very much. I manage better knowing now they are together with Jesus. I still hurt mostly from their absence from me, people say it gets better: I have learned it doesn't get better, we learn to adjust, to go on living. They live in my heart and therefore they will never die!
