James Carl Lankford, 94, of the Poor Valley Community of Rose Hill, Virginia, passed away Wednesday (October 10, 2012) at the Mountain View Hospital in Norton, Virginia.

A lifelong resident of Rose Hill, Virginia, he was the son of the late Harve and Ira Fee Lankford and was a member of the Rose Hill Christian Church.

He was a decorated veteran of World War II, having fought and was wounded at Normandy. He was awarded the Purple Heart, which was pinned to his hospital gown at an army hospital in England, where he was recuperating from his wounds.

Carl was also a member of the Boone's Path Lions Club and the Jonesville DAV.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Gloria Reading Lankford.

His daughter: Virginia Lankford Dillman and husband, Jack of Rose Hill, Virginia

Two grandchildren: Velvet Ledford and husband, John of Rose Hill, Virginia and Jacque Dillman of Jonesville, Virginia

One great-grandson: Jack Sebastian Ledford of Rose Hill, Virginia

Personal notes:
Carl and his family were friends of the Jerry & Cornie Easter Harber family of Rose Hill. They were very kind people and all how knew them were very lucky.

For many decades Carl had a watch shop in Rose Hill on US-58. He also ran the movie theater in Ewing, Virginia in (at least) the late 1960's (that's when I remember seeing movies there).
