Emmet Joseph Cashin Jr., former owner and president of Fox & Carskadon Realtors and a major force behind the residential and commercial development of the Peninsula, died Tuesday at Stanford University Medical Center after a brief illness. He was 75.
Mr. Cashin was a prominent presence in Northern California real estate for nearly half a century and played a leading role in the Bay Area's post-war growth.
Under his stewardship, Fox & Carskadon grew to become the nation's largest independent brokerage, handling many of the Bay Area's most significant real estate developments.
A fourth-generation Californian and resident of Atherton, Mr. Cashin was born and raised in San Francisco. He attended St. Ignatius High School and Stanford University. A champion swimmer who held three world records in the breast stroke, Mr. Cashin was admitted to the Stanford University Athletic Hall of Fame and the NCAA Swimming Hall of Fame.
During World War II, he earned a commission in the Marine Corps as a first lieutenant and was wounded in the battle of Okinawa.
In addition to his work with Fox & Carskadon, Mr. Cashin was a founding partner and chairman of the Fox Group -- one of the largest real estate investment groups in the country.
He also co-founded the real estate syndicate Fox & Carskadon Financial in the mid-1970s.
Mr. Cashin is survived by his wife, JoAnn Cashin of Atherton; sons, Emmet ''Skip'' Cashin III of Portola Valley and D'Arcy Michael Cashin of Menlo Park; a daughter, Bonnie Ann Cashin of Sun Valley, Idaho; stepdaughters, Deborah Blair of Oklahoma City and Paula Ann Dunn of Maui, Hawaii; 10 grandchildren and seven step-grandchildren.
Mr. Cashin's first wife, Dorothy, died in 1992.

A funeral Mass will be said tomorrow at 3 p.m. at St. Raymond's Catholic Church, 1100 Santa Cruz Ave., Menlo Park.
Interment is private; a family service will be held tomorrow at Holy Cross Cemetery in Menlo Park.
A trust is being established in Mr. Cashin's name, which will be dedicated to supporting the education of students involved in international real estate.
