Nancy Minerva Hamilton Sockwell
Birth: Mar. 20, 1830
Meriwether County
Georgia, USA
Death: Nov. 17, 1919
Mountain Park
Kiowa County
Oklahoma, USA

Nancy Minerva Hamilton Sockwell is my great-great grandmother and based on our family history, was undoubtedly one of the strongest women! She was the daughter of Moses and Nancy Fain Hamilton. She married Edwin Buchanan Sockwell, a recent widower with 6 children, on May 31, 1854. Nancy not only raised those 6 children as her own, she and Edwin had 7 more children. Edwin and Nancy moved from Fayette Co., Alabama to Franklin Co., Alabama in 1866 and their youngest son, Joel, was born in 1867. Edwin was a Confederate soldier in the "Home Guard" due to his advanced age, yet he and some of his sons served valiantly. Based on our family history, he was a rather stern man and even more so after the war. Around 1895, Nancy went to Oklahoma with her sons, Thomas, Moses, and Joel, and never returned to Alabama. However, several of her children remained in Alabama thus explaining the connections between many Alabama, Oklahoma and Texas "Sockwells". I very am fortunate to live in the log house where she and Edwin lived and I do feel her presence here! ------ Wanda Bradford
