Trooper Troy Lynn Duncan was a law officer, a State Trooper for the State of Alaska. Trooper Duncan was shot and killed as he and other members of his SERT team searched for a serial killer who had killed more than 12 people. Spotters in a fixed-wing airplane had spotted the suspect in a wooded area and two helicopters carrying SERT members were dispatched to the scene. As the helicopter carrying Trooper Duncan hovered approximately 15 feet above the ground, the suspect moved to within 50 feet of the aircraft and opened fire, striking Trouper Duncan in the neck.

Fellow officers returned fire with an AR-15, fatally wounding the suspect. Trooper Duncan was flown to a local hospital where he was prounced dead. Trooper Duncan was flown to Texas after a memorial service for him in Fairbanks, Alaska. His body was accompanied by his wife and two Alaska State Troopers. Services in Texas were held in the Church of Christ in Lometa, Texas, and conducted by Jack H. Kirby a cousin of Troy's. Troy was buried beside his mother, Ann Kirby Duncan at Senterfitt Cemetary, West of Lometa, Texas. Trooper Duncan was killed outside of Manley Hot Springs, Alaska.
