Henry's military records show that during the Civil War he was a volunteer in the 6th Regiment, Company C, East Tennessee Volunteers, Infantry Federal Army, that he was a prisoner of war "Present at Camp Wallace, October 31, 1862 "Par. Pris. (Parole Prisoner) at CC Ohio" date not given, transferred December 18, 1862.
He died 4PM, April 15, 1865 in Douglas Hospital, Washington D.C., of smallpox and diptheria at the end of the war.
He is only 1 of 4 Tennesseans to be buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
He is the son of Jabez Thurman and Nancy Tipton. He married Lucinda Tipton on 9 Mar 1861. He is the father of John Monroe Thurman and Richard Perry Thurman. 16 years after his death, Lucinda married his brother John Tyler Thurman.
