My 2nd Great Grandfather was born on Oct 04, 1842 in Pennsylvania, USA. He died on Apr 06, 1916 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA.

On Jun 8, 1860, Thomas was 18 years of age and living in the 13th Ward of Philadelphia with Henry and Phoebe Greenman. He was a paperhanger apprentice.

On Apr 21, 1861, Thomas enlisted in the US Army during the Civil War. He was attached to Co "I", 23rd Philadelphia Volunteers. He served 3 months and 10 days and was discharged 31 July 1861. On 21 August 1861, Thomas enlisted in the 5th PA Cavalry, Company "I", as a private. He served 2 years, 8 months and 9 days and was discharged on 30 November 1863. On 1 Dec 1863, He re-enlisted in the 5th PA Cavalry, Company "I" in Portsmouth, Virginia under Major William G. McCandless. He served 1 year 9 months and 7 days and was discharged 7 August 1865. His enlistment paperwork is not easy to read but it looks like he had brown eyes, brown or blonde hair, light complexion and was 5'10" tall.

On Sep 11, 1865, Thomas married Margaret T "Maggie" Clouden on her 20th birthday. They were married at Cohocsink Methodist Episcopal Church in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania by John Shields. On 8 Jun 1866, Thomas and Maggie had a little girl named Ida Virginia. On Jun 6, 1868 Ida died from some kind of complication that involved having a sore throat. Her death certificate is difficult to read. Thomas and Maggie lived at 1757 N 2nd Street. Ida was buried on 7 June 1868 at American Mechanics Cemetery in Philadelphia.

On Jun 22, 1869, Thomas and Maggie's 2nd child, John Clouden Pickering was born.

On 24 June 1870, Thomas and Maggie are found in the 1870 census, Philadelphia Ward 25 District 83. Thomas is 27 years of age, works as a carpet weaver, owns $500 worth of real estate and his personal estate is worth $150. Maggie is 26 years of age and John is 1 year old.

17 Aug 1871, Harry C Pickering was born. Harry died Aug 29,1872

In Jun 1890, The Eleventh Census of the United States, A Special Schedule for Surviving Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, and widows, shows Thomas living at 2003 Venango, Philadelphia. This schedule shows Thomas' dates of enlistment and discharge.

On Sep 12, 1896, Thomas' wife Maggie dies one day after her 52nd birthday, while living at 2003 Venango, Philadelphia. She is buried 15 Sep 1896 at Franklin Vault, Greenwood Cemetery, Knights of Pythias at Adams Avenue and Arrott Street, Philadelphia

Oct 2, 1897, Thomas is required by Department of Interior, Bureau of Pensions, Washington DC, to complete paperwork for his pension.
He states he is a widower and his wifes name was Maggie Clouden. He was married at Cohocksink M E Church on 11 Sep 1865. He states his former wife is Maggie Clouden Pickering and that she died September 12, 1896. He lists his living children as John C Pickering born 22 Jun 1869, Leonard Pickering born Jun 22, 1873, Francis Albert Pickering born Apr 15, 1875 and Irene Pickering born Jul 26, 1877.

May 22, 1898, Thomas marries Sarah Bonsall at Summerfield M.E. Church,Tulip and Daughine St, Philadelphia, PA by Rev Richard.
Sarah has 3 children by a previous marriage to William Bonsall. William was killed on the Philadelphia RR. On 3 April 1899, Sarah gives birth to a baby who was born prematurely and dies. She is buried at Greenwood Cemetery, Philadelphia. The child was not named and it is not known if this child was a boy or a girl.

Thomas and Sarah have been married two years, He is a carpet weaver, states his date of birth is Oct 1842, has not been unemployed, can read, write, speak english and rents the home.
Sarah has had 4 children and 4 are living but only three children are listed. She can read, write and speak english. She states her date of birth as March 1855. In Jan 1901, Thomas and Sarah are separated.

On Apr 4, 1915, Thomas was required to complete paperwork from Department of Interior, Bureau of Pensions, Washington DC. His address was 2321 N Howard Street, Philadelphia. He indicates his post office at enlistment was 616 Fairmount Ave. This is the same address that was listed on Phoebe Greenman's death certificate. Thomas was living with the Greenman's in 1860. He states that he and his wife Sarah had separated in Jun 1901 and "he hadn't seen her since". He also states that he was previously married to Miss Maggie Clouden on 11 Sep 1865 and that she had died on 12 Sep 1896. Thomas was asked to list all children and dates of birth, living and dead. Thomas provides the following information

On Apr 6 1916, Thomas dies at Philadelphia General Hospital from Pulmonary complications. His occupation is listed as "weaver", he is widowed, 73 years old. His daughter Irene McVaugh is the informant of his death. She lives at 2976 Tilton Street. Thomas was living with Irene when he died. He was buried at Greenwood Cemetery, Knights of Pythias, Philadelphia, PA.

On Feb 2, 1921, five years after Thomas died, Sarah divorced him.
